Event Information
Overview
This three-hour webinar will take place during the afternoon from 2-5pm. The full schedule will be shared once finalised. In the interim we can share our exciting line up of international experts who have already committed to being there.
Dr Carla Edwards is the International Olympic Committee Medical Expert Group mental health lead, a sports psychiatrist from Canada, and current chair of the ISSP. She will start the meeting with a discussion about the Milano Cortina Olympics and the mental health considerations for winter sport athletes. This will include discussions about safety in sport, athlete capacity for decision making and safeguarding athletes.
This will be followed by a talk by Olympian Kristen Spours. Kristen is a British figure skater who coped with adversity and significant injury to get to the Milano Cortina Olympics. She will discuss the resilience and toughness needed to get to where she got to as an unfunded athlete having to work and train full time. Following a catastrophic back injury which required surgery, she struggled with her mental health. However, she was able to return to sport and participate in the Olympic games.
The third part of our meeting will be delivered by a member of the BASEM safety in physical activity consensus group. This will describe how the group went through current evidence and concluded that the benefits of being active outweigh risks of ongoing sedentary behaviour. They will also discuss how to safely prescribing exerciser and activity in patients with multiple physical comorbidities and the circumstances when further medical attention could be needed.
There will be a Q&A session where you get the chance to ask practical questions about prescribing safely in a mental health environment.
