ADHD in the Perinatal Period: Recognition, Risk and Management Across Pregnancy and Early Parenthood
This presentation will explore the impact of ADHD on maternal mental health during pregnancy and the postnatal period, with a particular focus on hidden or previously undiagnosed ADHD presenting as anxiety, overwhelm, or postnatal depression. It will discuss diagnostic challenges, evidence-based approaches to medication management during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and practical strategies for supporting neurodivergent mothers through reasonable adjustments and perinatal care planning.
Key learning objectives
- Recognise the presentation of ADHD in the perinatal period, including the ways in which previously undiagnosed ADHD may contribute to or be mistaken for postnatal depression and anxiety disorders.
- Differentiate ADHD-related executive dysfunction from symptoms of postnatal depression, and identify key assessment considerations for women presenting to perinatal mental health services.
- Apply evidence-based management strategies for ADHD during pregnancy and early parenthood, including medication risk-benefit discussions, breastfeeding considerations, birth planning, and reasonable adjustments.
Dr Rebecca Harding (MBBS, BSc, MSc, MRCPsych) is a Perinatal Specialty Consultant Psychiatrist with NAViGO Health and Social Care CIC and serves as the Named Doctor for Safeguarding Adults and Children within the organisation. She is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Hull York Medical School (HYMS) and has specialist interests in perinatal psychiatry, women's mental health, safeguarding, and neurodevelopmental disorders across the reproductive lifespan.
