Professor Thorsten Barnhofer

Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Surrey

Thorsten Barnhofer, PhD, is Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Surrey. His research focuses on the evaluation and further development of mindfulness-based interventions for depression and related mental health conditions, with a particular emphasis on people with persistent or recurrent difficulties who have not responded to first-line treatments. He has led and contributed to clinical trials in collaboration with NHS services and is interested in the mechanisms through which mindfulness-based approaches may help to reduce vulnerability to chronic depression. Alongside his research, he is a cognitive-behavioural therapist and mindfulness teacher and contributes to the training of mental health professionals in evidence-based psychological interventions.
