Job planning for psychiatrists
* This document is under review and some guidance may be revised.
This report provides practical guidance for psychiatrists and employers on developing realistic and achievable job plans across psychiatric specialties. Updating the College’s 2017 guidance, CR207, it extends its scope beyond only consultant psychiatrists to cover all psychiatrists, recognising the different demands of specialties, service models and patient populations.
It sets out the College’s recommendations for balancing direct clinical care with supporting professional activities, including training, research, quality improvement and clinical leadership. Specialty-specific chapters provide example job plans and guidance on allocating sufficient time for assessments, clinical responsibilities and other activities.
The guidance also covers portfolio careers, flexible and remote working, caring responsibilities and the approval of job descriptions. Intended to inform job-planning discussions across all four UK nations, it aims to help psychiatrists and employers agree manageable workloads that support high-quality, person-centred care.
