President-elect of the Royal College of Psychiatrists Dr Lade Smith CBE has been appointed to The Royal Foundation’s national expert panel on tackling homelessness.

The panel will provide expert advice and counsel to The Royal Foundation as it rolls out its new Homewards programme

Launched by HRH The Prince of Wales, Homewards is a five-year project that aims to show it’s possible to end homelessness. Backed by up to £3 million in funding, Homewards will provide six flagship locations across the UK with new spaces, tools, and relationships to showcase what can be achieved through local efforts to prevent homelessness.

“Mental illness and homelessness are inextricably linked,” said Dr Smith. “Mental illness can cause anyone to lose their home, while housing insecurity and homelessness can trigger mental illness or make existing illness worse. Most people experiencing homelessness will have a mental illness.

“Tackling homelessness means providing those experiencing homelessness and those at risk of losing their home with effective mental health and other support when they need it, while ensuring support is accessible and tailored to each person’s individual needs.

“I’m delighted to have been appointed to the Homewards national expert panel and look forward to working with the Prince of Wales as he embarks on this ambitious programme to show it’s possible to end homelessness.”
