We are pleased to announce that both The British Journal of Psychiatry (BJPsych) and BJPsych Open have seen increases in impact factor on the previous year.

The BJPsych is at 10.671 (increased from 9.319) and BJPsych Open is at 5.165 (up from 3.209).

The impact factor is an index that reflects the yearly average number of citations of articles published in the last two years. We publish the impact factor alongside other metrics such as download figures and peer review statistics to present a fuller picture of a journal’s impact and quality.

BJPsych ranks seventeenth of 155 journals in the Science Citation Index (SCI) Psychiatry subject category, and tenth of 142 journals in the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) Psychiatry subject category. BJPsych Open now ranks 56 out of 155 (Q2) in the SCI Psychiatry subject category, and 42 out of 142 (Q2) in the SSCI Psychiatry subject category.

Last year saw the introduction of a new index, the Journal Citation Indicator (JCI). This represents the average Category Normalized Citation Impact (CNCI) of citable items (articles and reviews) published by a journal over a recent three year period. BJPsych’s 2021 JCI is 1.90, ranking it 17/257 in the Psychiatry category and BJPsych Open’s 2021 JCI is 0.91, ranking it 82/257 in the same category. Journals with a JCI of 1.5 have 50% more citation impact than the average in that category.
