Dr Trudi Seneviratne, Registrar of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, said:

“While we welcome the Government’s commitment to address the social care crisis, we need a long-term solution to help people with mental illness have the support they need to recover and stay well.

“Lack of social care provision contributes to more people reaching a mental health crisis and causes around half of all delayed discharges from mental health wards. Improving social care provision for people with mental illnesses will dramatically improve patient outcomes for the most vulnerable and reduce pressure on stretched mental health services.

“Mental health social care must be at the centre of Government plans for social care reform with appropriate funding to ensure the provision of services.”
