Job purpose

The Psychiatrists' Support Service (PSS) provides free, rapid, high-quality peer support by telephone to psychiatrists of all grades who may be experiencing personal or work-related difficulties. Peer Support Psychiatrists are members of the PSS Committee and College members with the skills and expertise to support colleagues in professional difficulty.

Key responsibilities

  • Attend PSS Committee meetings (around three times a year).
  • Contribute to reflective case discussions.
  • Support colleagues in difficulty in liaison with the Registrar, Head of Training and Workforce, and PSS staff.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and avoid sharing sensitive information by email.
  • Ensure timely and accurate record-keeping .
  • Securely store and destroy confidential paper records once cases close.
  • Maintain agreed communication timelines with colleagues.
  • Attend annual training/update days and complete relevant CPD.
  • Notify PSS staff of changes in circumstances or availability.
  • Escalate any serious concerns immediately.
  • Promote the PSS through outreach or social media.
  • Contribute to developing/updating PSS information materials.
  • Participate in workshops/presentations at external events.
