SAS Celebration Week 2026: SAS as a career choice (Dr Hemma Sungum)
05 October, 2026
As part of SAS Celebration Week 2026, Dr Hemma Sungum shares what she enjoys most about working as a SAS psychiatrist, and discusses her commitment to supporting medical education, wellbeing, neurodiversity and inclusivity.
Firstly, I am a human then neurodivergent working as a psychiatrist, with educational and wellbeing roles. My passion for compassionate, person-centred mental health care has been a staple since my training.
Although the SAS career path was initially an afterthought, it has given me the freedom to work across a variety of services and teams. These experiences have shaped both my clinical practice and my own mindset.
I value the autonomy and flexibility within my role, and I enjoy contributing to multiple teams across the Health Board, building relationships and learning from different colleagues and their perspectives.
Alongside improving services, supporting medical education, and championing neurodiversity and wellbeing, I remain committed to helping create a more inclusive, considerate and supportive NHS for patients and my colleagues alike.
