New Year's honours list

Professor Kamaldeep Singh Bhui, Professor of Cultural Psychiatry and Epidemiology at Queen Mary University, London was awarded a CBE for services to Mental Health Research and Care.

Professor Anita Tharpar is Clinical Professor, Institute of Psychological Medicine and Clinical Neurosciences, Cardiff University. Professor Tharpar was awared a CBE for services to Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Dr Siriol David, lately Head of Forensic Psychological Services, National Offender Management System Wales was awarded an OBE for services to Offender Management.

President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, Professor Sir Simon Wessely said:

‘’We are delighted to note the honours being given to Professor Kamaldeep Bhui, Professor Anita Tharpar and Dr Siriol David. This is another sign of the ever increasing recognition being given to mental health. But as they all will be the first to admit, they are the tip of a very large iceberg of people doing amazing things above and beyond the call of duty across the land to improve the lives of those with mental illness.’’

Paul Rees, Chief Executive of the Royal College of Psychiatrists said:

"It is fantastic news that Professor Bhui, Professor Tharpar and Dr David have received honours, along with so many other people working in the field of mental health.

The RCPsych has long been calling for parity of esteem for mental health with its physical counterpart, and honours such as these are vital to show how much we, as a nation, value the critically important work of doctors who support people suffering with mental illness."

The College also wishes to congratulate the following individuals and their notable achievements to improvements to mental health:

Jonathan Bernard Benjamin was awarded an MBE for services to National Campaigning on Awareness of Suicide and Mental Illness.

Ms Sarah Elizabeth Brennan Chief Executive, Young Minds was awarded an OBE for services to Children and Young People's Mental Health.

Ms Susan Baker Director, Time to Change was awarded an OBE for services to Mental Health.

Ms Jacqueline Dyer Vice-Chair, NHS Mental Health Taskforce was awarded an MBE for services to Mental Health.

Derek Andrew McClure was awarded a CBE for services to Mental Healthcare and People with Learning Disabilities.

Christine Janette, Mrs Craik, Director of Occupational Therapy, Brunel University was awarded an OBE for services to Occupational Therapy particularly Mental Health Services and Education.

Richard Lionel GUY For services to Justice, Mental Health Support and the community in Cambridgeshire. OBE

Professor Miranda Rachel Wolpert, founder, Evidence Based Practice Unit, AFNCCF and UCL and Co-Founder, the Child Outcomes Research Consortium. Professor Wolpert was awarded an OBE for services to Child and Adolescent Mental Healthcare.

Mrs Ann Elizabeth McGarrigle was awarded an MBE for services to Mental Health and the Bereaved in Northern Ireland.

Mrs Pamela Mary Preston, Volunteer, Samaritans was awarded an MBE or services to Mental Health in the West Midlands.

Mrs Katrina Whittaker was awarded an MBE for services to People Affected by Mental Health Difficulties.

Devan Alexander William Witter, founder, Devan Group, East Yorkshire was awarded an MBE or services to Children’s Mental Healthcare and Wellbeing.

Dr Carole Easton was awarded an OBE for services to Young People.

Mrs Angela May Rippon, OBE Development Lead, Dementia Friendly Communities was awarded a CBE for services to Dementia Care.

Alan Woodhouse, Volunteer, Samaritans was awarded an MBE for services to Vulnerable People in Merseyside.

Richard Edgar Price was awarded an MBE for services to the Samaritans and the community in Chester.
