Royal College of Psychiatrists responds to Channel 4 Dispatches and BBC Panorama broadcasts

Statement / comment
11 October 2022
We are deeply saddened by the distressing images in the Dispatches and Panorama documentaries, investigating the quality and safety of mental health services.

Patients with a serious mental illness, learning disabilities and autism, are being let down by services with devastating consequences for them, their families and carers.

We owe patients in mental health wards, who are among the most vulnerable in our society, safe and compassionate care. We owe their families and carers the reassurance that we are looking after their loved ones with integrity and kindness.

Health leaders across the system should take urgent action to ensure that all patients are treated with dignity and respect and that healthcare staff are supported to learn from past mistakes in order to provide the standard of care that patients deserve.
