Action needed to address drug-related deaths in England and Wales, says RCPsych

The Office for National Statistics has published new data on deaths related to drug poisoning in England and Wales in 2025.

Responding to the figures, Dr Julia Lewis, Chair of the Addictions Faculty at the Royal College of Psychiatrists, said:

"The fact that drug-related deaths remain high in England and Wales demonstrates the ongoing need for action. These figures are a reminder of the devastating impact that substance use disorders continue to have on individuals, families and communities. Behind every statistic is a person whose life has been lost, leaving loved ones and communities dealing with the long-lasting consequences.

"People experiencing substance use disorders often have complex social, physical and mental health needs. Chronic workforce shortages and the disconnect between health and social care services mean that too many people do not get the care and support they need and deserve.

"These findings underline the need to invest in the psychiatric and wider mental health workforce alongside funding for services that support the whole person. Reducing drug-related harm will require a joined-up approach across mental health, substance use and social care services, with a continued focus on prevention, harm reduction, treatment and recovery."
