RCPsych Members' Survey on the Mental Health Act 1983

In August 2017 RCPsych President Wendy Burn launched a survey to gauge opinion of members in England and Wales in anticipation the Independent Review of the Mental Health Act 1983.

It was intended that the results of the survey would help inform the College’s engagement with the Review.

The survey focused on the main areas of concern that had been raised by the Prime Minister, and those that had already been tackled by the Mental Health Alliance Survey of 2017.

These areas were:

  • Principles of the Mental Health Act
  • Community Treatment Orders
  • Rising detentions under the Mental Health Act
  • The disproportionate detention of people from BME communities
  • Nearest Relative
