National recruitment
The College is aware that there are a number of concerns around the growing competition ratio in psychiatry due to the success of our Choose Psychiatry campaign over recent years.
College Dean Professor Subodh Dave said:
“Whilst I’m delighted that psychiatry is becoming the sought-after career I have always known it to be, I do appreciate the challenges and consequences for applicants who don’t get a training programme in the round they hope for.
“I have also heard some concerns around the process and, whilst I’m assured it is a robust and fair process, selecting the right candidates for our specialty, there is always an opportunity for improvement.
“I am therefore working with the National Recruitment Board and NHSE North West Team who manage national psychiatry recruitment to consider changes to the national recruitment process that are robust, fair and are evidence-based in both the short and longer term.”
