Trainees Online (TrOn)

What is Trainees Online?

Trainees Online (TrOn) is the new online learning resource for trainees, produced by the Royal College of Psychiatrists. It provides interactive learning modules, to support trainee psychiatrists in preparing for the MRCPsych exams.

Learning Modules

All modules are peer-reviewed by experts, are checked by the College’s Examinations Panel for relevance to the MRCPsych syllabus and are supported by the College’s Psychiatric Trainees’ Committee (PTC).

Module topics are drawn from the basic sciences of the MRCPsych curriculum. Each one will take around 1-1½ hours to complete and it is intended that, in conjunction with the specific ‘Key Reading’ list, an examination-level understanding of a given topic can be expected. In time, around 70 learning modules will be built.

All modules also include: an introduction, a key reading list, personalised notebook tool, a selection of test questions, section summaries, take-home notes, plus author and reviewer biographies.

Trainees Online is useful for...

The Trainees Online site can involve and benefit those at all stages of their career:

  1. Core (pre-membership) psychiatric trainees - Learning in preparation for taking the MRCPsych exams.
  2. Higher (post-membership) psychiatric trainees - Revision materials, plus an opportunity to author teaching materials for the College.
  3. Educators - Access to high quality learning materials that support the delivery of postgraduate psychiatry teaching.
  4. All College members have free access to the site (all categories, including affiliates).

Quotes from the Advisory Board

“These modules are what I needed when I did my exams, plus I would have considered including usage of Trainees Online on my ARCP portfolio.”
- Dr Genevieve Holt (TrOn Trainee Editor)
ST5 psychiatrist, Clinical Fellow in Quality Improvement at East London NHS Foundation Trust.

“Trainees Online is explicitly based upon a proven model, the College’s CPD Online site. We hope you will enjoy using Trainees Online to aid your development as professionals, and that it will support your success in the membership examinations.”
- Dr Stuart Leask (TrOn Editor)
Clinical Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist at the Institute of Mental Health, Nottingham and Editor of CPD Online.

“The problem for trainees is that although there is a syllabus for the exam they are not always sure in what depth subjects need to be understood. The idea is that completion of a module, including any extra reading recommended, will give the trainee sufficient knowledge to pass the exam.”
- Dr Wendy Burn
Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist and Dean of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (2011-16).
