Academic strategy
Council approved the Academic Strategy in July 2026.
The Academic Strategy sets out a coherent framework structured around seven strategic pillars, each aligned to a corresponding strategic goal. Together, these pillars and goals address workforce capacity, translation and innovation, funding and research impact, regional equity, diversity and retention, training and education, governance and accountability. They provide a practical and ambitious roadmap to rebuild academic psychiatry, embed a research-active culture across the profession, and ensure that psychiatric research delivers measurable benefits for patients, services and society. The strategy highlights the key actions and corrective action needed to support the regeneration of academic psychiatry and champion for research capacity to be proportionate to the growing burden of mental illness in the years to come.

Formulation project
Formulation is more than a clinical tool. It helps us see and understand the person behind the clinical presentation. It sits alongside diagnosis, and is central to compassionate, safe and effective care.
This practical guide and the accompanying Psychiatric Formulation Template have been developed together to support clinical application of the biopsychosocial approach embraced by the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Both are designed to be comprehensive, inclusive and flexible.
