Statement / comment
30 July 2020

Today, NHS England, NHS Improvement and Health Education England published We are the NHS: People Plan for 2020/21 which sets out practical actions for employers and systems, as well as the actions that NHS England and NHS Improvement and Health Education England will take, over the remainder of 2020/21.

Dr Kate Lovett, Dean of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, said: “We are expecting more demand for mental health services in the coming months and the much needed investment for the mental health workforce is a welcome step in the right direction.

"We will be working closely with Health Education England on a dedicated plan to expand the psychiatric workforce beyond 2021.

"But if the Government wants to grow the workforce by over a third by 2024, it must urgently deliver a multi-year funding settlement for training and education, double the number of medical school places and put in place measures to improve retention.”
