The Royal College of Psychiatrists welcomes Liz Truss’s appointment as the new Prime Minister and Dr Thérèse Coffey on her appointment as the new Secretary of State for Health and Social Care as well as Deputy Prime Minister.

Dr Adrian James, President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, said:

“Congratulations to Liz Truss on her appointment as Prime Minister.
“We were pleased the Prime Minister listed building hospitals as one of her leadership priorities and we hope the government will make a firm commitment to build six new hospitals for mental health.
“It is also vital there is a dedicated national recovery plan that tackles the backlog in mental health as part of the Government’s focus on people getting the NHS services they need.
“We would like to congratulate Dr Thérèse Coffey on her appointment as the new Secretary of State for Health and Social Care as well as Deputy Prime Minister. Dr Coffey was right to highlight staff shortages as a key issue. We need to do all we can to retain and support our existing workforce as well as recruit more psychiatrists to be able to deliver improved services for patients.
“We look forward to working with the new government to make improving mental health services a priority.”
