National Student Psychiatry Conference 2025
Each year the College collaborates with one student-led Psych Soc to host the National Student Psychiatry Conference (NSPC).
This year, Leeds Psych Soc, ‘Psyched’ was selected via the competitive selection process with the conference taking place over the weekend of 1 February.
This year’s conference attracted record numbers of delegates with over 140 people registered.
Students and speakers travelled from across the UK and beyond.
Dr Lade Smith CBE, our President, joined virtually to give a welcome message and Dr Declan Hyland, the College Association Dean for Choose Psychiatry presented and chatted to students throughout the event. College staff were also present to talk to students about their career options in psychiatry.
Lectures all considered the central theme of 'nature vs. nurture' from different perspectives, including topics including genetics, spirituality, evolution, social media and neurodiversity.
Workshops were interactive and diverse, ranging from investigations of personality and identity to film club.
The oral presentation and poster competitions attracted over 30 applications, and the standard was impressive - the judges genuinely struggled to select a winner and all entrants have added a valuable line to their CV.
The specialty competition was very lively – everyone enjoyed the chance to shout about why their psychiatric specialty was the best.
This event, along with our other careers activities, is part of the work we do to support and encourage students to Choose Psychiatry and to support them throughout their careers.
We work to familiarise people with the challenges and benefits of working as a psychiatrist from early on in their careers so that they choose and continue in psychiatry throughout their training.
