Delirium: Recognition and Management

This event explores the recognition, assessment, and management of delirium, focusing on its presentation, underlying causes, and key differentiations from related conditions. Attendees will gain insights into practical assessment tools, treatment strategies, and emerging research to improve care for patients experiencing delirium.

Dr Renate Claassen
Renate will provide an introductory overview of delirium, discussing its common presentations and the vulnerability-threshold model. She’ll share practical bedside assessment tips, strategies for identifying and managing underlying causes, and insights from a case study. She will also touch on the latest guidance and emerging research, including the use of EEG in delirium assessment.

Dr Annabel Price
Annabel will focus on differentiating delirium from dementia and depression, along with other conditions like catatonia and psychosis. She’ll address severe behavioral and psychological symptoms, including when to use medications. The talk will also cover complex presentations (e.g., DLB, steroid psychosis, substance-related states), essential care strategies for agitated patients, and legal frameworks relevant to delirium management.

Annabel is vice-chair of Royal College of Psychiatrists Liaison Faculty and consultant psychiatrist at Cambridge and Peterborough Foundation Trust working at Addenbrooke's Hospital. 

Dr Renate Claassen

Renate is a consultant geriatrician at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge since 2021, with a specialty interest in cognitive disorders. She completed her training in the Netherlands, and has worked in the multidisciplinary Addenbrookes Memory clinic since 2022.
