Event Information
Programme
Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) affects between 1-3% of the population. Symptoms can range in severity and for some it can be a profoundly disabling disorder. OCD responds well to both modern psychological as well as pharmacological treatments but despite this it is often misdiagnosed, misunderstood, and does not receive effective treatment.
The CBT techniques required to treat OCD are different to those used in anxiety and depressive disorders and when poorly applied can be detrimental to the patient and lead to worsening of the condition. Those with the condition who are left with no help are at risk of suicide and the physical complications of self-neglect.
This course aims to dispel the confusion underlying the psychological treatment of OCD and describe how psychiatrists can recognise the condition and work to achieve successful outcomes. It seeks to equip psychiatrists to be better able respond to the needs of people with OCD by successfully combining psychological and pharmacological treatments.
