Event Information
This course aims to educate general adult psychiatrists about the nature, assessment and management of adult ADHD.
While ADHD has long been studied and discussed in the context of childhood, there is mounting evidence that its symptoms often continue into adulthood, where more individuals are now being diagnosed and navigating its impact. Adult ADHD is frequently comorbid with other disorders: neurodevelopmental disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, alcohol and substance disorders. It is, therefore, important for general adult psychiatrists to be able to diagnose ADHD in this population and differentiate it from other disorders.
The aim of the foundation course is to help general adult psychiatrists gain a better understanding of adult ADHD and learn about diagnosis and support. It seeks to support psychiatrists to be able to recognise and respond to the needs of people with adult ADHD by successfully combining pharmacological and psychosocial interventions whilst taking into account the wider support requirements for people with ADHD and their social network.
The programme will commence in autumn 2026, featuring a live online event in November and supported by an eLearning module, which delegates can access from September 2026.
- Understand the core diagnostic features and neurobiology of adult ADHD.
- Gain knowledge of the outcomes of childhood ADHD in adulthood.
- Be able to screen for and diagnose adult ADHD and distinguish ADHD from other common mental health disorders.
- Be able to provide an overview of the treatment options for adult ADHD.
- Gain a better understanding of the issues in providing a service for people with adult ADHD.
The Adult ADHD Foundation course offers a total of approximately 10 hours of learning, including:
- one comprehensive eLearning module
- access to some existing RCPsych Learn resources on related topics
- one full-day webinar and live Q&A with an expert faculty
- an end-of-course assessment, on completion of which you will receive your course certificate.
The eLearning content is live and available for you to access from September, ahead of the November online event, and we will notify you by email once it is available.
The eLearning content of this course will be accessible until 27 January 2027 (12 weeks after the webinar date).

- Complete the end-of-course assessment to receive your course CPD certificate.
The eLearning module will take approximately four hours to complete. This figure is for guidance only, as the time taken to complete the course will vary according to individual learning styles.
Please be aware that the eLearning module must be completed before attending the online event.
After the online event, you will be able to access the end-of-course assessment in your My learning area.
Upon completing the course, you should receive two certificates:
- 1 x Certificate for online event (4 Nov)
- 1 x Certificate for overall course completion including eLearning content
