Advancing Mental Health Equity Collaborative events
This page provides dates, information and stories from the AMHE Collaborative's events.
A key part of the AMHE Collaborative is the in-person learning sets which are hosted at the Royal College of Psychiatrists in London (21 Prescot Street, London, E1 8BB).
Learning sets provide an excellent opportunity for shared learning, with space for presentations, breakout rooms, networking and in-person Quality Improvement (QI) support from the NCCMH's QI team. These events also provide the space for team to further their knowledge about co-production a key part of the work of the AMHE Collaborative. Team's will have the chance to learn about co-production from the NCCMH's Experts by Lived Experience (EbE).

Presentation 1 : Knowing your population and their needs
Tom Ayers chairs a discussion with Christine Burke, Deirdre MacManus and Lade Smith around knowing your population and their needs, with particular focus on people with learning disabilities and veterans.
Presentation 2: Putting the patient’s voice at the centre
Dr Rajesh Mohan, Rehab Psychiatrist and RCPsych Presidential Lead for Race and Equality, shares an example of co-production and putting the patient’s voice at the centre of decision making, in the form of service user led Care Programme Approaches (CPAs) in inpatient rehabilitation.
Presentation 3: Identifying your population
Dr Amar Shah, National Improvement Lead at the National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health, provides guidance on how to prepare to identify potential populations, with the ultimate aim of improving access, experience and outcomes for those populations as part of the AMHE Collaborative.

Presentation 1: Identifying populations
Uju Ugochukwu, Consultant Psychiatrist and Medical Director for Quality, and Helen Smith, Quality Improvement Coach, Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, describe their approach to selecting their first population for inclusion in the programme and how they are using data to inform their decisions. They also provide an overview of their next steps and how they are engaging with care teams, professionals, services users and citizens.
Presentation 2: Embedding community voices
Amraze Khan, Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust, provides an overview of their engagement plan for staff, service users, the local community and stakeholders. Amraze describes how the Trust are engaging service users at all levels of the programme, including at board level.
Presentation 3: Reflections on populations
Tom Ayers, Director of National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health (NCCMH), chairs a discussion with Laura-Louise Arundell, Lead Researcher and Developer, NCCMH, Mark Farmer, Carer Representative on the Equality Taskforce, NCCMH, Dr Raj Mohan, Consultant Psychiatrist, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and RCPsych Presidential Lead for Race Equality, and Dr Lade Smith, Consultant Psychiatrist, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, Clinical Director of NCCMH and RCPsych Presidential Lead for Race Equality, about their reflections on the earlier presentations and the collaborative’s work so far, and the potential pitfalls to be aware of.
Presentation 4: Co-production workshop
Mark Farmer, Carer Representative on the Equality Taskforce, National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health, leads a workshop on co-production, exploring the differences between co-design and co-production, the meaning and value of co-production and Mark shares his tips on making it successful. Participants share conclusions from the breakout room discussions.

Presentation 1: Engaging with the local community
Tracey Sherlock, Business Development Officer at Neath Port Talbot Mind, provides an overview of their ‘Together / Gyda’I Gilydd’ programme, which is being delivered in partnership with the Neath Port Talbot Black Minority Ethnic Community Association. Tracey talks through a range of approaches they are taking to engage different community groups, some of their initial findings, and how this work will inform service improvement.
Presentation 2: Establishing your population needs in the absence of reliable data
Fatin Hussain (Consultant Psychiatrist, Somerset NHS Foundation Trust) and Lee Reed (Quality & Equality Officer, Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group) provide an overview of the process they have followed to identify local communities experiencing mental health inequalities, particularly in the absence of reliable data for communities such as the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller population in Somerset.
Common challenges and potential solutions
In the learning set, we also heard from teams across the collaborative about the shared challenges they are facing in this work and how they are overcoming these. We've collated these challenges into a document and highlighted some potential solutions teams could try to overcome these.

Presentation 1: Listening, learning and leading
Joanna Boldeau, Operations Director for Mind in Tower Hamlets and Newham talks about the community listening model Mind in Haringey and Mind in Tower Hamlets and Newham are using to engage with communities.
Presentation 2: Identifying and tackling health inequalities of Asian/Asian British men over 40 years old, that live in Bedford
Sharon Gugerly. Kayleigh Sanders and Laush Loganathan from Bedfordshire Wellbeing service talk about their work in Bedford to improve overall wellbeing , quality of health of life of Asian and Asian British Men over 40 years of age.
AMHE Workshops
These workshops will provide a space for Mind organisations on the AMHE Collaborative to have the space and time to reflect on project progress and receive Quality Improvement and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion support from the AMHE Collaborative Project Team.
