Locally employed doctors (LEDs)

This page provides information and resources for locally employed doctors.

Locally employed doctor is a general term used for any doctor who is not on one of the nationally agreed contracts (Consultant, Specialty Doctor, Specialist) and may be variably called Clinical Fellows or Trust Grade doctors.

LEDs have an important role in the psychiatric workforce and are taken on by a variety of different psychiatrists. If you work in a psychiatric department after foundation training, if you have to leave core training without the requisite experience to gain a Specialty Doctor contract or if you are an international medical graduate looking to work in the NHS for the first time, you may be offered a local contract.

You can find out more information about LEDs, what the roles are, how they work and resources to support employers on the NHS England Employers website.
