Today, NHS England has published the Mental health personalised care framework: the modern care programme approach. The framework outlines the approach needed to deliver tailored care for adults who have a severe mental illness.

Professor Subodh Dave, President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, said:

“We welcome the release of this framework which will give patients more say over their care by mental health services in England while ensuring their fundamental needs are consistently met. Services that have the staff and resources needed to implement it effectively, should be able to work together more closely and deliver better care for patients from their first referral through to their long-term recovery.

“Personalised care can take many forms, from ensuring a patient is always seen by the same trusted clinician to keeping a record of which loved ones to contact if they experience a crisis. It helps people engage with their treatment and can save lives.

“Mental health services operate at their best when they combine clinical expertise with patient input to offer support that is suited to each individual’s unique needs and circumstances. Community, inpatient and voluntary services should consider how they can best implement the principles set out in the framework and tailor them to their local communities.

“In order to fulfil the ambitions of the framework, it is vital that the mental health workforce is expanded to support services that are under huge pressure and struggling to manage rising demand. It will also be important to reinforce these key principles in the upcoming Modern Service Framework for severe and enduring mental illness and ensure they are acted upon by all services regardless of where they are based in England.”
