Core Values for Psychiatrists

The Royal College of Psychiatrists has recently published 'Core Values for Psychiatrists' (CR204).


The Report:

  • articulates and clarifies the values operating in psychiatry today

  • complements and sits alongside the RCPsych Code of Ethics and Good Psychiatric Practice

  • highlights a skills based approach to the curriculum, to training and to working with complex and conflicting values, facilitating balanced decision-making in clinical practice

  • enables a collaborative understanding between the patient and the psychiatrist which in turn can have a positive impact on health recovery outcomes for the patient

  • outlines 8 Core Values; these are developed into themes and principles covering all ages from the early developmental stages through to end-of-life care
