The Royal College of Psychiatrists is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Gin Malhi as the next College Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the world-class British Journal of Psychiatry (BJPsych).
As College Editor, Professor Malhi – who is a Professor at the University of Sydney – will have overall responsibility for the content and development of the College’s publishing portfolio.
Professor Malhi is a world-renowned expert and leader in the field of mood disorders. He is a Fellow of the RCPsych and of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP). As President of the International Society for Bipolar Disorders, Professor Malhi has championed the mentorship of psychiatry trainees and junior academics.
Over the past 17 years, Professor Malhi has been the editor of three international journals, and thus brings a wealth of experience to his new roles. More recently, he has held several positions with the BJPsych, including as Deputy Editor and Editorials Editor.
He has personally published over 700 articles and was presented with the RANZCP Senior Researcher Award. Due to his expertise in depression and bipolar disorder, he has twice chaired the development of binational mood disorders guidelines for Australia and New Zealand.
Professor Malhi will succeed current College Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the BJPsych, Professor Kam Bhui CBE on 11 July. Professor Bhui, who is an expert on cultural psychiatry and ethnic disparities in psychiatric disorders, is Professor of Psychiatry and Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist at the University of Oxford. Among other roles, he is Honorary Professor at the Centre for Psychiatry, at Queen Mary University of London.
He has held the posts of College Editor and Editor-in-Chief for the last 10 years and has made invaluable contributions to the College’s publishing portfolio of journals and books. Leading the setting up of the successful publishing partnership with Cambridge University Press (CUP), Professor Bhui ensured that, among other things, the BJPsych stable of publications has become ever more influential.
At the end of 2022, the BJPsych had an impact factor of 10.671, up from 9.319 – making it seventeenth out of 155 journals on psychiatry globally. It was also the most downloaded journal on the Cambridge University Press website – with 3.8m full-text downloads. His incredible work for the College saw him being made an Honorary Fellow of the College in November last year.
The Royal College of Psychiatrists would like to extend their appreciation and gratitude to Professor Bhui for his outstanding service and commitment to the College’s publishing portfolio. His leadership and dedication has shaped the success of the College journals and books and has ensured the evolution of the programme keeps up with the ever-changing landscape faced by academic publishing.
Professor Kam Bhui CBE said:
“What a great honour and privilege it has been serving as Editor-in-Chief on BJPsych and College Editor for the last ten years, with global impact in policy and practice. My thanks are due to board members and reviewers who work relentlessly and voluntarily, and to authors for sharing their amazing work.
“I am overjoyed to hear that Professor Malhi has been appointed as the next College Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the BJPsych. His long-standing experience in scientific publishing, journal management, and as an expert in bipolar disorders will be of immense value. I know the family of journals will continue to flourish and are in good hands.”
Professor Gin Malhi said:
“I am thrilled to be able to follow in the distinguished footsteps of Professor Bhui as the new College Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the BJPsych. His unwavering commitment over the last decade has been an inspiration to all.
“I will endeavour to continue his legacy by expanding the global influence of the College’s publishing portfolio and will ensure that they continue to embody excellence. The BJPsych is an invaluable resource for everyone working in the field of mental health and I am extremely grateful to be able to help guide its future.”
