Resources to support Thrive in Psychiatry

In this section we are sharing resources relevant to the subjects discussed in our 2025 Thrive in Psychiatry campaign.

RCPsych Retention Charter

The College has produced a Retention Charter  which aims to address a key priority: supporting and nurturing psychiatrists and supporting healthcare organisations to retain psychiatrists.

Leadership

In the first podcast of the campaign, Dr Derek Tracy, Chief Medical Officer at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, spoke about the role of leaders, and the opportunities for leaders to make a difference.

Neurodivergent psychiatrists

Also in the first podcast, consultant psychiatrist Dr Shevonne Matheiken spoke about the challenges neurodivergent doctors face in the workplace and what needs to be done to improve support.

The College has developed Helping Neurodivergent Doctors Thrive: An Inclusion and Support Framework. This document is intended to provide practical guidance to neurodivergent psychiatrists in training, and those responsible for their education, providing evidence-based recommendations and practical tools which can be used in real world situations.

Information for employers on neurodivergent doctors, and what reasonable adjustments can be taken, are also contained in the College's Providing Reasonable Adjustments guidance.

Taking a break

In our fourth podcast we talked about taking a break, including discussing the SuppoRTT programme for resident doctors taking a break of more than three months in England, and whether a similar scheme could be rolled out in the devolved nations.

Find out more about the SuppoRTT scheme.

Workforce Wellbeing Hub

The College's Workforce Wellbeing hub provides links to the Psychiatrists' Support Service, 'You are not alone: the Psychiatric Resident Doctors' Committee's series of podcast episodes on colleagues with lived experience, and much more.

Other key resources

The College has published other key resources to support the retention of psychiatrists.
