In my day job of Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist in a busy community mental health team in Leicester, I often come across young people struggling to thrive in adverse socioeconomic conditions – these may be due to poverty, parental mental health problems, coming from families who do not have the basic necessities of a stable home, who struggle with access to education and healthcare due to various factors.
I feel that these young people tend to get the lowest priority from over-stretched provider services, the focus is on adults whose human rights are not being honoured.
From my experience of working alongside partner agencies such as Social services, Police, Education when involved in Safeguarding proceedings for some of my patients, I know that a lot can be achieved from collaborative working led by a clear vision and future-proof directives.
I would therefore wish to contribute to the Committee's role in upholding the Human Rights of our patients and their families, and advocate for the human rights of children.
