Dr Fiona Martin
SCHR member
I am a Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist, currently working in a Community Mental Health Team in Northern Ireland. In my clinical practice I strive to adopt a holistic approach to patient care, including lifestyle psychiatry, and am currently undertaking training in interpersonal therapy. I worked across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland during my training, and observed how differences in mental health legislation in these jurisdictions impacted on clinical practice and patient care.
My interest in human rights in psychiatry began when I was the RCPsych Psychiatric Trainees Committee (PTC) representative on the SCHR in 2019-2021. Now as an Educational Supervisor I am passionate about ensuring that human rights have adequate coverage in the psychiatry curriculum.
I also have an interest in human rights in psychiatry in the global context, and in particular in upholding the human rights of forced migrants. I spent time volunteering in a mental health service in Uganda part-way through my psychiatry training in 2017-2018. And on my return, I completed an MSc in Global Mental Health at the University of Glasgow; my dissertation was a systematic review of the mental health of irregular migrants to Europe. I am now a visiting lecturer on global mental health at the London School and Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and University of Glasgow.
