Covering medical training, quality assurance, supervisor report writing, resident doctor revalidation, supervision and feedback, and recruitment and retention.

Course content overview

Seven unique eLearning modules, covering:

This module looks at the organisation of medical training in the UK, the roles of the three supervisor types and the bodies involved in the wider training structure.

Psychiatry training in the UK is overseen by a number of bodies with different functions in the quality assurance process. As a supervisor it is important to have a good understanding of their roles and how they interact. This module looks at the roles of key bodies involved in the quality assurance of training.

This module looks at trainer development for clinical and educational supervisors, including the consideration of resident doctors' priorities from their supervisors.

We will cover guidance for trainers from the Academy of Medical Educators and the Royal College of Psychiatrists, as well as offering supporting information and development opportunities.

This module looks at the purpose of workplace-based assessments, the various types of WPBAs a resident doctor will encounter and who can carry out assessments.

The supervisory roles are outlined, including the input the role types in subsequent supervisor report writing.

This module provides an overview of the Annual Review of Competency Progression (ARCP) outlining its purpose, process and preparation requirements for both supervisors and resident doctors; engagement from both parties is crucial for a successful ARCP.

Form R and the various ARCP outcomes are discussed, including how to support resident doctors to achieve positive outcomes and avoid adverse ones.

This module examines how the working environment can affect a resident doctor and the wider team, and your part as a supervisor in helping to ensure integration and a positive learning environment.

This is especially important for international medical graduates (IMGs) who may be unfamiliar with British culture and linguistic meaning, as cultural misunderstandings can sometimes lead to a resident doctor being classed as being ‘in difficulty’.

We will also look at what constitutes a resident doctor in difficulty, and review some example case studies on how to manage the struggling doctor.

This module examines the recruitment and retention process for both UK trained and internationally trained resident doctors.

We will look at how to support UK and international medical graduates with career progression within psychiatry, and identify key factors behind differential attainment and how to address this pervasive issue.

Ultimately we will realise how to help resident doctors reach their full potential and remain part of the psychiatric workforce.
