Come and join us on 26 April to learn about new psychiatric treatments which can be used in our routine clinical practice.

We are extremely pleased to have three eminent speakers to give us an update about neuromodulation with rTMS and tDCS, management of antipsychotic induced weight gain the use of Metformin and Glucagon-like-peptide 1 receptor agonist and recent advances in management of insomnia which will include information about Daridorexant, recently approved by NICE for long-term insomnia.

This is an event by the Northern and Yorkshire Division.

Dr Julian Mutz - Postdoctoral Research Associate, Kings College London

Dr Julian Mutz is a post-doctoral research associate at the Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry Centre at King’s College London. He completed his undergraduate training in Psychology (BSc) at the University of Groningen and University College London. He earned a postgraduate degree in Affective Disorders (MSc) from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience at King’s College London and is a graduate of the International Master in Affective Neuroscience (MSc) of Maastricht University. Dr Mutz obtained a PhD in Epidemiology and Population Health from King’s College London in 2022. His research interests include population health, the epidemiology of psychiatric disorders, frailty and biological markers of ageing, and evidence synthesis studies of brain stimulation treatments for depression and bipolar disorder.

Dr Mutz has published several articles on brain stimulation treatments for mood disorders, including systematic reviews and meta-analyses of the efficacy, acceptability and cognitive effects of non-invasive protocols such as transcranial magnetic and electrical stimulation.

Dr Artemis Igoumenou – Associate Professor in the UCL

Artemis Igoumenou is an Associate Professor in the UCL Department of Psychiatry and an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist in the Complex Care Locked Rehabilitation Unit at Barnet Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust. She is also the Trust's Research Director. She gained her undergraduate nursing degree from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece, her MSc in Mental Health, her undergraduate medical degree and her PhD from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. She started her core psychiatry training in Cornwall and completed it in Oxford. She completed her advanced psychiatry training in Oxford and obtained her CCT in General Adult Psychiatry and Psychiatry of Addictions (with endorsement equivalent in Rehabilitation Psychiatry).  She then became an NIHR funded Clinical Lecturer on the North London/Queen Mary University training scheme, obtaining her CCT in Forensic Psychiatry.

Her research interests include the assessment and management of risk (violence, self-harm), and the mental and physical wellbeing of individuals with complex mental health diagnoses (including those who have offended and reside in secure hospitals or prisons). Her research has focused on specific populations such as offender and rehabilitation psychiatry populations, but also general adult psychiatry populations. 

Dr Kirstie Anderson – Consultant Neurologist and Sleep Specialist, Newcastle University 

Dr Kirstie Anderson is the neurology lead within the Newcastle Regional Sleep Service and Honorary Senior Lecturer, Newcastle University. She lectures widely on sleep medicine and developed an insomnia training course, now in it’s 10th year. Research interests include digital health and big data to assess sleep and the role of sleep disturbance in mental health and neurodegeneration. As the sleep lead behind the award winning SleepWell project, the safe introduction of protected sleep for in-patients was developed within one of the UKs largest mental health trusts.

She featured in a 2019 TEDx talk, and developed online insomnia therapy at www.sleepstation.org.uk. This was the first online insomnia therapy available across NHS England. She has authored over 100 articles on sleep medicine alongside the 2nd edition of “How to Beat Insomnia and Other Sleep Problems”.

She is a member of the British Sleep Society, Past President of the Sleep Medicine section of the RSM and was insomnia lead for the Department of Health group developing consensus guidelines for the IAPT programme.  She is an honorary medical advisor to the DVLA https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Kirstie-Anderson
