Overview
How can we improve the justice system regarding the specific needs of women, particularly regarding the interface with mental health services, perinatal services and regarding the importance of addressing the issue of violence against women and girls (VAWG)?
This fascinating webinar has five speakers with considerable expertise on advocating for women in the criminal justice system and Family Courts from different perspectives – a brain injury and domestic abuse researcher, a public health academic, a perinatal psychiatrist and psychologist, and a human rights lawyer.
Our first speaker is Stephanie Bechelet, a Brain Injury and Domestic Abuse Researcher at Brainkind. She will share some of her research and findings with us, connecting brain injury, domestic abuse and mental wellbeing.
Our second speaker is Dr Elizabeth Dalgarno, public health academic and director of SHERA group, which leads innovative research into the health impacts of domestic abuse. She has particular expertise on women and child victims' health experiences of family courts and how the risk of harm to women and children has been caused by unregulated and self-declared experts.
Our third and fourth speakers are Dr Caroline Pontvert a perinatal psychiatrist and Dr Christy Pitfield, lead psychologist for the Perinatal Pathway based at HMP Bronzefield. They will discuss the clinical experience of working within a service that aims to support pregnant women in prison with a trauma-informed approach.
Our fifth speaker is Harriet Wistrich, a solicitor specializing in human rights and a founding director of the Centre for Women’s Justice and author of the recently published book, “Sister in Law”. She has successfully challenged many high-profile cases with relevance to addressing the issues of violence against women and girls (VAWG) within the justice system.
Join us for an important, challenging but hopeful webinar looking at the difficulties for women in the justice system and how we can be part of the solution.
