Forced migration and mental health:

The impact of post migration factors

Event Information

This event will take place online-only via EventsAir on 16 April 2026

In the United Kingdom the challenges for people seeking sanctuary are complex and constantly changing. Even since the RCPsych’s 2024 report on “Protecting the Mental Health of those seeking sanctuary in the UK’s evolving legislative landscape”, the political and legislative situation has evolved and remains increasingly hostile.

With higher prevalence of depression, PTSD and psychosis in asylum seekers and refugees compared to the general population, as clinicians we will come across these individuals in day to day practice. The unique boundaries to treatment and vulnerabilities of this population can mean clinicians feel out of their depth and lacking in the appropriate knowledge of how best to support this population group.

This study day aims to highlight some of the major factors in the post migration journey that impact the mental health of those seeking sanctuary. We hope that by sharing some practical examples of projects providing support, we can learn and reflect together to improve our future practice.
