Overview of the role
To ensure that College policy in the field of ethics remains up to date and reflects best practice as well as provide advice on specific ethical issues raised by psychiatrists that they are encountering in their own clinical roles.
Key Responsibilities
- Chair meetings of the Professional Practice and Ethics Committee (PPEC) Committee, which may be held 3 times per year at the College or elsewhere.
- When commissioned to do so, work with the Committee to provide advice on ethics related issues within mental health.
- Ensure the College Report, “Good Psychiatric Practice” is regularly reviewed and updated.
- Provide advice and support for media enquiries on ethics either through the Committee or identified external expertise if needed on a particular issue.
- Working closely with the Policy and Campaigns Team, lead on policy development and consultation response in matters relating to ethics.
- Support development of updated College learning and training modules to support psychiatrists in implementing ethics based clinical practice.
- Consider requests for advice from external sources on ethics related matters within mental healthcare services
- Provide quarterly updates on progress to the Registrar, including details of proposed deliverables and activity undertaken to achieve them
