The RCPsych International Congress Advisory Board are holding an open call for new members to join the board. We are seeking Psychiatrists at any level of their career, from all specialties, based either in the UK or internationally. Board members advise and support the RCPsych Executive Committee, who has responsibility for delivering a high quality and balanced scientific programme.

Previous experience of working on conference programmes is desirable but not essential if you can demonstrate other experience you can bring to the role.

We would particularly welcome greater international representation on the board.

This is an ideal opportunity for anyone thinking about getting involved in College activity for the first time.

The role offers complimentary registration to Congress.

About the RCPsych International Congress Advisory Board

The International Congress is the college’s flagship event and takes place annually, it is one of the most prestigious events in the mental health calendar. It traditionally happens over a period of four days in the last week of June. 

The representative will be an integral member of the advisory board working with the Associate Dean for Advanced Learning, the Congress Co-Chairs and the college’s Events Team to engage the wider membership and partner organisations in advocating for the International Congress. 

The Advisory Board meet twice a year (virtually) to discuss a range of issues relating to the International Congress and advise and steer the executive committee. The Advisory Board are also responsible for reviewing the session submissions to help formulate the programme.

Key responsibilities

We expect that you will:

  • Advise the Congress Executive Committee to help plan and deliver a high quality and balanced scientific programme representative of the specialty and those that work within it 
  • Propose keynote speakers
  • Review and score all Congress submissions 
  • Review and plan Congress fringe programme
  • Identify gaps in the programme and suggest commissioned sessions if necessary 
  • Attend two planning meetings per year, one following the Congress to review what went well and what didn’t and one in the autumn after reviewing the session submissions to help put together the programme 
  • Publicise the event whenever possible
  • Advise and suggest innovations to keep the Congress relevant

Time commitment

Approximately 2 meetings (around 1.5 hours each) p.a. via MS Teams. Attendance at the International Congress for four days, usually at the end of June. Review of the Congress submissions, the review period is open for two weeks at the beginning of November.
