Sport and Exercise Psychiatry SIG Spring Webinar | Safety in Sport and Safe Exercise Prescribing

Event Information

This webinar focuses on two connected priorities in modern clinical care: safety in elite sport and safe exercise prescribing for patients.

The session opens with Dr Carla Edwards, mental health lead for the International Olympic Committee and Chair of the International Society for Sports Psychiatry. Drawing on preparations for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, she will discuss safety in elite sport, including safeguarding responsibilities, athlete decision making under pressure, and protecting mental health within high performance environments.

British Olympian Kristen Spours will then reflect on her journey to Olympic competition, discussing the resilience required in elite sport while highlighting the mental health impact of serious injury and the importance of safe, supported return to sport.

The final session will be delivered by Ashley Ridout from the British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine safety in physical activity consensus group. This session will focus on the safe prescribing of exercise in clinical populations, highlighting how the benefits of physical activity generally outweigh the risks of inactivity, while also recognising situations where additional caution is required.

This section is designed to be highly practical, giving attendees the opportunity to ask questions about prescribing physical activity within their own patient groups and to explore common concerns about safety. Guidance will include recognising clinical red flags, contraindications to exercise, and when further medical assessment is appropriate. The aim is to support clinicians in feeling confident and safe when recommending physical activity as part of patient care.

Together, the sessions highlight the theme of Safety across both elite sport and clinical practice.
