The chair of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in Northern Ireland has responded to a BBC NI news article on the provision of a new regional Mother and Baby Unit in Belfast.
Commenting, Dr Julie Anderson, Chair of RCPsych in Northern Ireland, said:
“The Royal College of Psychiatrists in Northern Ireland welcomes this announcement. As we know, mental illnesses can be treated and managed effectively, and early interventions reduce, or even prevent, the need for further mental health treatment later in life. This dedicated Mother and Baby Unit will provide the right care when it is needed the most and has the potential to save lives.
"For far too long in Northern Ireland, if a new mother requires an acute mental health admission they are forced to be separated at one of the most critical points of life. This is simply unjust.
"Those admitted to a Mother and Baby Unit with their newborn will often require less time in hospital and have a smoother journey after they are discharged, compared to mothers who are admitted, without their baby, to a general adult mental health ward.
"Looking ahead, careful consideration should be given to ensuring the unit can open safely, with adequate resources and staffing in place."
