CPD eLearning: what’s new in April 2025
Since the last quarterly update, the following new content has been released on CPD eLearning:
Podcast: Catatonia
infrequently encounter catatonic presentations in clinical practice. In this podcast, CPD eLearning Deputy Editor, Dr Bruce Tamilson, speaks to Dr Jonathan Rogers about significant developments that have been made in diagnosing catatonia. This includes identifying catatonia, differentiating from similar presentations, and discussing the various approaches to assessment and investigations. CPD credits: 0.5
Module: An introduction to health economics
In psychiatry, health economic analyses are used to assess the burden of diseases, the direct and indirect impact of mental illness on society, and the cost-effectiveness of psychiatric interventions. This module provides an overview of key concepts used in health economics and how the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) uses these concepts while assessing new medications or other health technologies for the NHS. CPD credits: 1
Podcast: Military psychiatry
Mental health in the military may seem like a confusing topic for NHS psychiatrists. However, there may be interfaces between the military and NHS at key points in a service person’s journey, which is why it is important for NHS psychiatrists to have a sense of understanding of this topic. This podcast will aim to review some commonly held misconceptions about mental health within the military and introduce the support available when service personnel leave the military. CPD credits: 0.5
As part of our Module updates programme, we look to update our content every two years. Recently released updates include:
Buprenorphine in opioid dependence
Buprenorphine is a NICE-approved treatment for both maintenance and detoxification in opioid dependence. It provides an important alternative to methadone and has similar efficacy in maintenance. This module will help you gain confidence in the use of buprenorphine for both the maintenance and detoxification phases when treating opioid dependence. CPD credits: 1.5
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)
ECT is the most effective treatment for severe depressive illness. It also has an important place in the management of certain other psychiatric illnesses, particularly where other treatments have not been effective. However, ECT is viewed by many patients as being hazardous and the cause of serious side-effects, particularly memory loss. Many psychiatrists rarely prescribe ECT, and the purpose of this module is to guide the prescriber through the process with reference to the latest evidence and recommendations about ECT. CPD credits: 1
Psychosocial management of self-harm: Parts 1 and 2
Part 1 of this series looks at national policy towards the management of self-harm in the UK and Republic of Ireland, detailing a range of psychosocial interventions used after self-harm and gives an overview of treatment effectiveness. Part 2 includes clinical vignettes which introduce us to two patients presenting with a history of self-harm and their entrance into psychosocial therapies to reduce the repetition of these behaviours. CPD credits: 1 (for each part).

Our 200+ CPD eLearning modules and 170+ podcasts are accessible via annual subscription, with a discount available for College members.
Many employing bodies have already taken out institutional subscriptions with us, providing access to CPD eLearning for groups of 10 or more people via OpenAthens; you may like to ask your librarian or CPD supervisor whether your employer is one of these.
We also offer an add-on option for institutional subscriptions of 50 licences or more to design their own learning paths or select CPD eLearning resources to create a mandatory training package, to tailor the learning for groups of learners.
