Event Information

  • Dr Parvinder Shergill is a psychiatrist in London CNWL who is also a film director for mental health films, and has featured with BBC/channel 4, Sky Amazon. She will discuss the importance of using film to help raise awareness and educate about mental health especially important in a pandemic when people can't get to their service due to difficulty. 
  • Mark Williams is a Keynote Speaker, Author and International campaigner. In 2004 he himself experienced depression and suffered in silence for years until he entered community mental health services. He founded International Fathers Mental Health Day and #Howareyoudad campaign to make sure all parents are having support for the whole family. Mark has spoken on television and radio stations around the world while working with Dr Jane Hanley who have both published articles on Fathers (Paternal) Mental Health together. Mark was awarded Inspirational Father of the year and local hero at the Pride of Britain Awards in 2012 even invited to meet The Royal Family on World Mental Health Day also awarded the Point Of Light Award by the Prime Minister in 2019. In 2020 Mark published the report called "Fathers Reaching Out - Why Dads Matter" to explain the importance of paternal mental health which has far better outcomes for the whole family and the development of the child when we include fathers. In 2021 the film Daddy Blues based on Mark's journey is now available on Amazon Prime. Mark is an ambassador for Mother's for Mother's and Mother's Matter Charities.
  • Molly Vandermeer is an award-winning Writer, Director & Producer. After graduating from in English Literature and History of Art, gained qualifications from NFTS, the London Film Academy and Met Film School. spent 6 months working for Michael Winterbottom. Molly’s documentaries have a social activism focus and her dramas are centred around intense, emotional conflicts.
  • Juggy Sohal is a British South Asian BBC presenter, an acclaimed producer and writer. Juggy produced documentaries with SBTV for the Home Office's Knife Crime Free Campaign, and launched the brand new Upload BBC Radio Show. In 2020 alone Juggy has created-written-produced two short films currently circulating in film festivals, and worked as a producer-assistant director on two feature films, one airing with Amazon Prime. Juggy is passionate about diversity in the industry and in his storyline.

 

This webinar focuses on the important role of film in mental health to help reach a wider, more diverse population, in the hope this helps normalise mental health in communities and earlier prevention of ill health.

Dr Parvinder Shergill, an award winning filmmaker and NHS Psychiatrist, talks with creatives in the film industry on how we can join forces with Hollywood to help spread awareness in mental health via our cinema screens.

  • 4.10pm- Daddy Blues: Author Mark Williams on the importance of turning his book Daddy Blues into a film
  • 4.20pm- Twelve: filmmaker Molly Vandermeer on working with NHS doctors to make mental health films
  • 4.30pm-Diversity in mental health and film: BBC Presenter and Filmmaker Juggy Sohal, on the importance of reaching diverse ethnic communities in a creative manner 
  • 4.40pm- Q&A panel with speakers. Chaired by Dr Parvinder Shergill
