Day 2: Friday 16 June 2023

9.30am – Conference opens for registration

10am-1pm – Buvidal: a Welsh pandemic success story – why we are global leaders and where next?

Refreshments at 11am

Wales moved fast with the roll-out of Buvidal due to its inherent benefits and ability to move nimbly in lockdown. A combination of clinical awareness of its benefits, excellent engagement of commissioners and politicians and a flexible will to do things better in the context of the pandemic.

Speakers include:

  • Professor Steve Husbands, who has led medicinal chemistry research on Buprenorphine for decades
  • Dr Lucie James, who has led on developing the psychological approaches needed to help patients further benefit from Buvidal
  • Professor Jan Melichar, who was involved in its funding and successful roll-out in Wales

Presentations will cover:

  • the patient story ('I feel normal, I'm not craving and I'm getting on with my life' – live and video stories of patients who saw the changes)
  • the clinical story (what did we see and why was it so game-changing?)
  • the commissioning story (how did we go from <20 in 2019 to >1300 in 2023?)
  • the pharmacological story (did kappa cause what we saw?)
  • the psychological story (what do we now need to do to help people achieve their full recovery potential?).

1-2pm – Lunch

2pm – ARBD: everything you need to know about ARBD but were scared to ask

Professor Julia Lewis, our leading Welsh clinician in the area, who helped write the Welsh Strategy document, gives a state-of-the-art review and vision for the future

3pm – Dual diagnosis: how to make things work in the context of a busy rehab service

Dr Katie Fergus, RCPsych Wales Rehab Psychiatry Lead. An overview of the issues that come up when substance misuse and mental health issues are both present, as well as a look forward to the next conference.
