Overview
Pilots as patients and fitness to fly; the unique challenges of aviation psychiatry
We are delighted that Crispin Orr, Chief Inspector at the Air Accidents Investigation Branch in Farnborough, will be joining us to speak about their work investigating accidents and serious incidents in order to enhance aviation safety. Also speaking will be Aedrian Bekker, a clinical aviation psychologist and a founding director at the Centre for Aviation Psychology, who has developed a bespoke peer support framework. Our third speaker is Asha Pook, a serving Royal Air Force consultant psychiatrist and expert in aviation psychiatry, who can help us understand the regulatory framework and impact for clinical practice. Our final speaker will be Gavin Ingles an RAF Chinook helicopter pilot.
The event and reception costs £30 for OPSIG members and £40 for anyone else, please book early as numbers are limited. We very much hope to see you in person.

Occupational psychiatry trainee poster prize submissions and award – clinical case and occupational literature review
Our summer event also hosts our first poster prize competition.
All psychiatry trainees are invited to present a poster at the meeting, focused on an appropriately anonymised clinical case you have seen, with an accompanying literature review highlight the occupational aspect of their presentation. The winner will be selected and announced on the day, not only having the prestige of our first prize, but also free attendance at our 2024 event(s) and an invitation to speak at our next meeting. Please refer to the GMC guidance and discuss with your supervisors if in any doubt about anonymisation for educational purposes – patient consent would be needed if the poster could identify them.
There is no specific format beyond the required clinical scenario and associated literature review.
We would need to know you intend to bring a poster to the event, and you would need to be registered to attend on the day, but otherwise the deadline is that you would bring your submission to the event on 5 July.
To confirm your poster submission and if you have any questions about the meeting please email sigs@rcpsych.ac.uk.
