Event Information

Arts Therapies and Psychiatry – joining up the dots

Discussing how greater understanding between Arts Therapies and Psychiatry within NHS Mental Health Services can enhance our provision of care.

This conference will offer an insight into Arts Therapies through presentations from and discussion between Arts Therapists and Psychiatrists in the form of panel discussion and participatory workshops.

Examples of Arts Therapies interventions will be given by the Arts Therapies Service from Cambridge and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust including lectures and workshops on Music and Art therapy which have developed many approaches, and work across a wide variety of clinical populations and settings; a participatory Art workshop facilitated by an Art Therapist and a Psychiatrist, Music Therapy workshops and Music Therapy presentations looking at the effectiveness of Music Therapy with different age groups, including a Music Therapy Dementia research study, and case study of Music Therapy in Paediatrics. Participatory workshops will feature art, singing, drumming and music giving an experiential innovative opportunity for those attending.

Speakers include Kimberley Iyemere who pioneered a  Recovery Focussed Arts Therapies Service and was awarded a top local NHS award and runs an extremely successful Arts Therapies service, she has published and lectured internationally. Kimberley has collaborated Dr Trudi Seneviratne OBE – RCPsych Registrar, Consultant Adult and Perinatal Psychiatrist at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust looking at the connection between Psychiatry and the Arts and Arts Therapies for many years now. Dr Seneviratne has inspired this conference and both Kimberley and Trudi are champions for the Arts and Mental Health. Art Therapist Michael Whitaker will encourage thought about what happens when patients are given a space within mental health services, to express and think about themselves creatively, in addition to the framework that psychiatry gives them to express and think about themselves. He will suggest that it allows for a more complete sense of the individual to be witnessed. This will be illustrated by his highly innovative handmade wooden art trolley packed with art materials and inspirational quotes which is a wonderfully creative response to the dilemma of providing creativity across different mental health wards.

Workshop facilitators include Sreeraj Kollarukandy, a talented new Music Therapist who has won two recent awards - the ‘Highly commended alumni’ award at the Anglia Ruskin University’s Vice Chancellors outstanding awards 2024 in the ‘Rising Star’ category, he has also won the AHP integration award for integration, based on feedback from other professionals on wards. Sreeraj's role as a Music Therapist is highly valued by those who benefit from the service, as well as a range of professionals who observe weekly the positive impact of his fantastic work’….. ‘There is often standing room only in his group and even the staff are keen to join in’

Other Music Therapists including Emily Corke who will be running a Choir workshop, Valentini Toumpari presenting her work in Paediatrics, and Naomi Thompson Research Assistant, Cambridge Institute for Music Therapy Research will be presenting research into standardising the use of Music Therapy to reduce distress on inpatient Mental Health Dementia Wards.
