Event Information

This year’s Psychiatric Trainee Conference, held in collaboration with the Psychiatric Trainees' Committee (PTC), will be held in the heart of the lively and dynamic city of Cardiff.

As the capital of Wales, Cardiff boasts cultural heritage, natural scenic beauty and a modern and vibrant entertainment scene.

The PTC would be delighted to welcome you to the conference taking place at Techniquest, a state-of-the-art science museum, on 11 and 12 May 2023.

The event, which is held with support from the Welsh Government and Health Education Improvement Wales, is open to all that are interested in the programme including Consultants, SAS doctors, foundation trainees, medical students and, of course, psychiatry trainees.

Psychiatry Beyond Prescription focusses on the skills and values of psychiatrists outside their role as prescribers.

The programme will feature exciting and relevant topics for psychiatrists in 2023 including sustainability, wellbeing, psychological therapies, careers and much more. The full programme will be announced shortly but confirmed speakers include:

  • Professor Femi Oyebode on "Is psychiatry working?"
  • Dr Pratima Singh on Nutritional Psychiatry
  • D Shahid Latif on Social Prescribing
  • Professor Alka Ahuja MBE on Digital Healthcare
  • Dr Mat Hoskins on MDMA-Assisted Psychotherapy

Alongside these exciting keynote lectures will be a series of workshops covering sustainability, mindfulness, what we can learn from the antipsychiatry movement, Balint opportunities, Psychiatry in film, portfolio drop in and an exciting workshop by Miss Zoe Barber, Consultant Breast Surgeon and inspiration for ITV's Maternal, on being a woman and mother in medicine.

The provisional programme is available in our conference guide, you'll find that HLOs have been matched to sessions to make it easy for trainees to evidence what they have learnt from the conference.

Psychiatry Beyond Prescription will be held in a truly unique and exciting venue, an interactive state-of-the-art science museum. With exclusive use of the museum across the conference delegates can enjoy not only the conference but the exhibits on offer at Techniquest.

The Psychiatric Trainee Committee is inviting poster submissions for our conference on 11 and 12 May 2023.

All submissions will be reviewed ahead of the conference and successful authors will be invited to present.

A prize is awarded to the most successful candidate who gains the most votes via our online conference platform.

The poster should be regarding “Psychiatry Beyond Prescription” and be presented in digital format to be displayed at the conference.

We ask that posters are submitted by Friday 28 April to Dr John Moore for approving/feeding back, with a final version to be submitted by Monday 8 May. The following poster guidance should be followed.

We are delighted to host an informal evening reception following the event. This will give an opportunity to connect with other psychiatrists and continue to enjoy Welsh hospitality. The reception will take place at the Norwegian Church Arts Centre overlooking the views of Cardiff Bay on the 11 May.

We have highlighted just a small selection of hotels in Cardiff Bay, and listed details where you can find out further information. Additionally, Cardiff Bay is in close proximity to the City Centre. Should you wish for more details of accommodation that's available in the City Centre, please just let us know.
