What will this event cover?
Prescribing medications is an important aspect of our clinical practice, The General Medical Council (GMC) in the UK provides guidance to doctors, including psychiatrists, on prescribing medications. The GMC's guidance emphasises the importance of prescribing safely, effectively, and in patients' best interests while considering the broader aspects of patient care.
Dr Edward Farnan is a GP and a medicolegal advisor for the Medical Defence Union, he will give an overview of the recent GMC guidance (2021) and pertinent legal aspects of the prescribing.

Dr Edward Farnan
Ed Farnan has been a medico-legal adviser at the MDU for over 10 years. Prior to that he was a GP partner in a large practice in Northern Ireland, where he was also the clinical governance lead. He was also a member of a research ethics committee. He has a masters degree in medical law.
As a medico-legal adviser, he advises and assists doctors and other MDU members on ethical and medico-legal matters including complaints, adverse incidents, inquests, GMC investigations and criminal matters arising from clinical care.
He also writes articles for MDU journals and other publications, as well as delivering lectures and presentations on behalf of the MDU at courses and other events. He is a member of the MDU’s medical education team.
