Occupational Psychiatry in practice: fitness for work, from the Armed Forces to Formula 1, and what you need to know

Stop press! We are thrilled to announce the final speaker for our spring event. David Mackenzie, the global head of employment, incentive and pensions legal team at a major international bank will also be joining our other esteemed speakers, to provide an expert perspective on our engagement with employers and employment law.

Good work has a significant positive mental health impact; it gives structure, reward, connectedness and purpose. Supporting our patients into work, or to return to it, is core business for all psychiatrists and should be viewed as a meaningful treatment outcome. Specialist occupational psychiatrists have greater expertise in the bi-directional relationship between work and health, which is needed in both public sector and commercial environments.

The OPSIG is delighted to invite you to our Spring afternoon meeting at the Royal College of Psychiatrists on Monday 18 March 2024, where we will explore the practice of occupational psychiatry for both the generalist and specialist. To maximise our discussion we will meet face-to-face, with talks from 3.30pm - 5.30pm, followed by a networking canape reception with our guests and the OPSIG executive.

Our speakers include forensic, general and sport psychiatrist Phil Hopley, the founding Medical Director of Cognacity and provider of mental health services across sectors including Formula 1 motor sports. We are also joined by Anne Fieldhouse, the senior occupational medicine physician to the UK Armed Forces and the medical expert for Army recruitment and training. Neil Greenberg, renowned international expert in occupational psychiatry, who founded psychological health consultancy March on Stress, and has provided expertise to government and organisations following incidents and disasters, will talk about his work. Alex Langford will also share his personal experience of developing specialisation in occupational psychiatry from an NHS consultant post into independent practice.

Please note - only trainees who have bought a ticket to the event will be able to present a poster on the day

All psychiatry trainees are invited to present a poster at the meeting, with the winner being awarded the annual Occupational Psychiatry Poster Prize! The poster should focus on a clinical scenario and accompanying literature review. It does not need to be a real case, it could be fictional, but if based on a patient must be appropriately anonymised for educational purposes. GMC guidance and supervisors would assist if in any doubt.

The winner will receive free attendance to our 2025 meetings and at invitation to speak at an event, as well as the recognition of being a prize winner of course! To confirm your poster submission or if you have any questions please email: sigs@rcpsych.ac.uk

This event is in-person only and unfortunately it won't be recorded, nor will it be possible to view it online.
