How to stay safe online

The College has issued guidance for members to help you stay safe when using social medial channels.

We’re aware members have a range of levels of experience using social media channels, and that many of you use social media to support knowledge sharing and for other reasons relating to your role as doctors.

There are a number of risks when using social media, and so we hope members will find this guidance useful.

It is supplementary to the College’s social media policy, which members should already be familiar with.

Nothing in these documents is intended to suppress or prevent open, respectful discussion and debate. The College is a democratic organisation that embraces diversity of thought and believes that as an organisation with many members who have a variety of different views, we should create the opportunity for a sharing of opinions.

What does the guidance contain?

The guidance includes advice on:

  • posting safely
  • how to deal with negative comments and replies
  • what to do if you experience trolling
  • protecting yourself from 'doxing' (when a third party publishes personal information about you online)
  • using social media before, during and after a College event.

It also signposts further information on related topics.
