Members debate on assisted dying

Next month the College will be holding a debate on assisted dying and assisted suicide, as the first of a series of special President’s events for members.

The motion of the debate will be ‘This House believes Assisted Dying/Assisted Suicide should not be available to people whose sole underlying condition is a mental illness.’

Professor Patricia Casey will be one of two speakers for the motion.

The event will be hosted in London on 15 October, starting at 6.30pm, with a drinks reception afterwards.

Members will also be able to join remotely to take part in the debate.

"Each President is invited to hold several President’s lectures for members.

"I was keen to stage a President’s debate as well as President’s lectures, and this is such an important and current topic."

The audience will be asked to vote on the motion before hearing the debate. Two speakers will make the case for and against the motion, and there will be a Q and A during which speakers take questions from the audience.

Speakers will make final speeches, and then the audience will vote again.

Lade added:

"I hope as many members as possible come to the event to watch it live, and that if you’re not in a position to do that, you watch the debate remotely."
