Overview of the role

This is an opportunity to lead College work in supporting and developing leadership and management in psychiatry, promoting the centrality of good clinical leadership and medical management to effective mental health services.

The LMC (Leadership and Management Committee) promote the advancement of medical leadership. Management and quality improvement at all stages of the medical career for the benefit of patients. The Committee is working to embed a culture of medical leadership in mental health services, which will ultimately mean better care for patients.

Key responsibilities

  1. Chair the Leadership and Management Committee and attend Council.
  2. Develop collaborative links with internal College structures and external organisations, particularly the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management (FMLM) to further the job purpose. Attend the Council of the FMLM.
  3. Advise concerning curriculum development and expected competencies for formal medical management roles and develop mechanisms for embedding these in clinical and managerial practice.
  4. Advise concerning, and develop, training approaches to support leadership and management in psychiatry with reference to appraisal and revalidation.
  5. Promote medical management and leadership as a valuable career choice.
  6. Develop networks for medical leaders and managers, both current and potential.
  7. Understand and develop relevant links with other systems, including those in devolved administration.
