Surg Cdr Luke Baker

Chair, Psychiatric Trainees Committee

Surg Lt Cdr Luke Baker is the current Chair of the Psychiatric Trainees’ Committee (PTC). He was elected Vice-Chair in 2019, Secretary in 2018, and has represented London trainees since 2017. He has led on multiple projects, including the upcoming cost of training transparency document, workforce opportunities, recruitment and engagement. He has also helped produce many of the COVID trainee webinars.

Surg Lt Cdr Baker completed the St Andrews - Manchester medical programme. He joined the Royal Navy in his final year of medical school, and completed his foundation programme at Frimley Park Hospital. After completion of F2, he completed Initial Officer Training at Britannia Royal Naval College (receiving the Captain’s Personal Prize and Top Medical Officer Prize), and then spent about 2 years serving on Ships and Submarines around the world.

He has undertaken all of his previous psychiatric training on the Maudsley Training Programme (receiving the highest mark nationally for general adult training at his ST interviews) and is currently a General Adult ST6 trainee based within a military setting.

Alongside his clinical training, he is currently studying for an MBA at the Durham University Business School, having received multiple scholarships.

Surg Lt Cdr Baker has also been involved with multiple other committees, enabling him to engage with trainees and colleagues to improve training, trainee representation and patient care. He is the Secretary of the NATO Military Mental Health Panel Research Task Group, having previously been the Secretary to the Panel and has also Co-Chaired the Higher Trainees’ Committee of the Maudsley Training Programme.

He has previously Co-Chaired the Association of University Teachers of Psychiatry (AUTP) Trainees’ Committee, launching a brand new scholarship programme and lecture series. He is passionate about teaching, and has acted as an Educational Supervisor, Firm Head and Balint Group facilitator at King’s College London Medical School, has received a teaching excellence nomination and is also on the committee of the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN) Summer School. He has recently been appointed a CQC Junior Doctor Specialist Advisor.

Surg Lt Cdr Baker enjoys engaging with trainees, medical students and foundation doctors at Summer Schools and Welcome Events. He also enjoys travel and taking part in a variety of outdoor activities.
